Home-based support is a growing need for people with dementia and their carers. In direct response to that need, Alzheimers Auckland have developed a free service which enables people to stay in their communities as long as possible and in the safe and familiar environment of their own home.
What is Home-based Dementia Support?
In 2004, Alzheimers Auckland introduced a service called the 'Domiciliary Care Service' with the objective of providing respite for the Carer and appropriate activities for the person with dementia in their own homes. The service has since been renamed 'Home-based Dementia Support'.
Our 'Dementia Support Worker' is a person experienced in dementia care who visits the home of the person with dementia on a weekly basis. The Carer has 2-4 hours of much-needed respite and depending on the needs of the person with dementia, a customised activity package is developed.
What Are The Benefits Of Home-based Dementia Support?
There are numerous benefits of home-based support with some of the leading ones being:
- Providing a service in the home of the person with dementia has helped to reduce some of the disorientation, paranoia and agitation that can be experienced by taking them to a less familiar respite environment
- The Carer feels less stressed by being able to leave their person at home and is able to enjoy their valuable hours of care respite
- As no one dementia is the same, the ability to create individual activities suited to that person's need is having good results.
